SCHOOL ORGANISATION

SCHOOL SOCIAL WORK

Since the 2023/24 school year, Wangari Maathai International School has been offering youth-focused school social work through the Technische Jugendfreizeit- und Bildungsgesellschaft gemeinnützige GmbH (TJFBG).

School social work supports pupils, parents, and teachers with social and academic challenges. It offers counselling, promotes personal development, and takes preventive action on issues such as bullying and stress to promote the well-being of pupils and a positive learning environment.

We offer individual and confidential counselling for pupils, parents, and teachers on topics such as:

  • Family/non-family concerns
  • School stress
  • Addictive substance use
  • Bullying, cyberbullying, discrimination
  • Abusive behaviour
  • Leisure and all-day activities
  • Year-specific activities

Additional tasks:

  • Support in class councils and student councils
  • Support on hiking days and school trips (if particularly needed)
  • Organisation of prevention programmes
  • Support in class and year teams

The social services office is located on the 4th floor, room 5.01.5B.

Lisa Kirchhof has been head of school social work since June 2025: l.kirchhof@wmis-berlin.de.

Diversity

We see ourselves as an intercultural community that acknowledges the variety of our different
backgrounds, cultures, nationalities, religions, education, mentalities, experiences, and languages as a great asset. Each individual has unique resources and qualifications that they can share with the school community.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the school social worker, Lisa Kirchhof (l.kirchhof@wmis-berlin.de), or the teacher of trust, Ms. Zwicker (s.zwicker@wmis-berlin.de).

Class counsil

What is the class council?
The class council promotes democratic coexistence and participation in the school as an institution. It is the democratic forum of a class.

In the meetings, the pupils discuss and decide on topics they have chosen themselves: the structure and organisation of learning and coexistence in the class and school, current problems and conflicts, joint plans and activities. The weekly core group sessions form the framework for the class council.

Student ID card

A student ID card serves as identification for pupils and can be used to obtain discounts. It is necessary to apply for a BVG card so that children can use public transport free of charge.

We issue student ID cards when the school photographer visits. These cards are valid for one year. New children receive a paper ID card. Please bring a passport photo and report to the school office, where a student ID card will be issued promptly.
