VisAbility Project WMIS

Dear parents,

I'm really excited to tell you about a new program called VisAbility that I'll be running with the children over the coming weeks. I have been working with a Berlin-based educational publisher, Kristen Harrison from Curved House Kids, to create a program that uses art to open up conversations about culture, identity and community. The program is designed to be done online and empowers students to learn, create and communicate whether they are learning on-site or remotely.

Over the course of 6 weeks students will engage with the critical analysis of art, develop visual literacy skills, learn about a diverse group of contemporary artists, and strengthen their communication, listening, and empathy.

The program will run from Monday 15th February to Friday 26th March (Easter holidays). On Monday 15th I will send an intro video explaining the programme. I will also send two lessons per week. These will be sent on a Monday and can be done any time during the week. The lessons will be based around three contemporary artists and the themes that appear in their work and we will spend two weeks – or 4 lessons – exploring each artist.

At the end of the program we will publish all materials for free so that other schools across Berlin (and beyond) can utilize the programme. This will also be part of our Creative Engagement ethos, by developing an arts rich environment for your children.

We're really excited to be working with Kristen who I have worked with on a number of art projects. She brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise across education, publishing, art pedagogies and curation.

warm regards,

Dee Mulrooney

Dear parents,

I am very pleased to introduce you to a new program called VisAbility to be able to tell you what I will do with the children in the next few weeks. I've been working with a Berlin-based publisher, Kristen Harrison of Curved House Kids, collaborated to develop a 6-week elementary school program that uses art to open conversations about culture, identity and community. The program is designed to be conducted online, giving students the opportunity to learn, create and communicate whether they are learning on-site or remotely.

Over the course of 6 weeks, students engage in critical analysis of art, develop visual literacy skills, learn about a diverse group of contemporary artists, and strengthen their communication, listening and empathy skills.

Key dates and lesson plan

The program runs from Monday 15 February to Friday 26 March (Easter holidays).

On Monday February 15th I will be sending an introductory video explaining the program.

I will also send two lessons a week. These are sent on a Monday and can be done anytime during the week.

The lessons are based on three contemporary artists and the themes that emerge in their work and we will explore each artist for two weeks (4 lessons).

At the end of the program we will release all materials free of charge for other schools in Berlin (and beyond) to use the program. This will also be part of our Creative Engagement ethos of developing an art rich environment for your children.

We are very excited to be collaborating with Kristen, who I have worked with on a number of art projects. She brings a wealth of knowledge and experience in education, publishing, arts education and curation.

Best regards
